Fort Snelling, Minnesota – On Friday, January 2, 2026, Major Adam Stenberg was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel during a dignified ceremony held at the historic Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel. The promotion was presided over by Brigadier General Joe Sharkey, who administered the oath and pinned the new rank on LTC Stenberg in the presence of family, friends, and fellow service members.
LTC Stenberg, a longtime member of The Old Guard Association (TOGA), has a distinguished career marked by leadership in combat deployments, ceremonial duties, and strategic planning across multiple theaters. The Old Guard Association expressed deep pride in his achievement, noting his enduring commitment to excellence and service. TOGA board member Donald Raleigh attended the event to witness the promotion firsthand, underscoring the strong bonds within the organization that honors the legacy of the 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard).



LTC Stenberg’s military journey began in March 2006, when he joined the Army after three years as a Legislative Assistant in the U.S. Congress and eight years as a Financial Advisor in Minneapolis. A Distinguished Military Graduate of Echo Company Officer Candidate School, he was commissioned as an Infantry Officer in August 2006.
His early assignments included service at Fort Lewis, Washington (now Joint Base Lewis-McChord), where he served as Rifle Platoon Leader, Executive Officer, and Assistant Operations Officer in 2-3 Infantry, 3/2 Stryker Brigade Combat Team. During a 13-month deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, he also served as the liaison officer to U.S. Division-North. Following redeployment, he held the role of Operations Officer for the Joint Integration Office at the newly established joint base.
After completing the Maneuver Captains Career Course at Fort Benning, Georgia, LTC Stenberg moved to Fort Bliss, Texas, serving as Brigade Planning Officer and deploying to Afghanistan for six months in support of Operation Enduring Freedom with 3/1 Armored Division (Infantry Brigade Combat Team). From 2012 to 2014, he commanded Action Company, 2-5 Infantry.
In 2014, he transitioned to Washington, D.C., and Fort Myer, Virginia, where he served as Training Officer for the 3d Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard). He later served as Aide de Camp to the Commanding General of the Military District of Washington and Joint Force Headquarters at Fort McNair. After attending the U.S. Marine Corps Command and Staff College at Quantico, he returned to The Old Guard as Executive Officer and Operations Officer for 1st Battalion, overseeing the Presidential Salute Battery and Caisson Platoon during their sacred mission of honoring fallen service members at Arlington National Cemetery.
In 2019, LTC Stenberg joined the 2d Security Force Assistance Brigade at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, as Strategic Planner. He deployed to Afghanistan once more, serving as Executive Officer and Operations Officer for 3d Squadron in Mazar-e Sharif. Upon return, he commanded Alpha Troop (Team 2310), leading the training and deployment of the first four Advisor Teams to West Africa in 2021.
Most recently, LTC Stenberg served as Training Management Officer at the Army Training Support Center at Fort Eustis, Virginia, integrating training requirements into the Program Objective Memorandum planning cycle. In January 2024, he transitioned to the Minnesota National Guard and returned home to Minnesota with his family. Assigned as Deputy Chief of Staff for the 34th Infantry Division, he was immediately deployed to Baghdad, where he served as Executive Officer to the Commanding General of Operation Inherent Resolve.
A graduate of the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science in Economics, LTC Stenberg also holds a Master of Military Studies from Marine Corps University. He is married to Sharalyn (Deming) Stenberg, and they have four children: Georgia, a Physician Assistant in the Twin Cities, married to Mitchell Weege; Everett and his wife Jenny, stationed with the Navy at Pearl Harbor; Bennett, a Student Naval Aviator in Pensacola; and Eleanor, a junior at the University of Oregon.
LTC Stenberg’s decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (with one Oak Leaf Cluster), Meritorious Service Medal (with four Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Commendation Medal (with one Oak Leaf Cluster), Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, Ranger Tab, Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, and Pathfinder Badge.
